Here's a quick tutorial on how to create a decent looking rock from a sphere if you need a closeup rock render (someone please shoot that hideous Vue rock and put it out of its misery). You don't have to use the Rock Generator - any bumpy rock-like material will do. This works well if you need a few nice looking rocks for closeup renders. Not recommended to populate an ecosystem since it will generate anywhere from 50K to 200K polys.

Awesome DAVE! Such a great idea, I had to try it myself and then blog about it. Thanks Smile

Thanks Chipp. looks great. I've been bugging our friends at e-on about trying to fix/replace/shoot the charming and lovely Vue rock. It's just incredibly embarrasing to see all the otherwise outstanding Vue landscape renders in the galleries and have them spoiled by those ugly, jagged, cartoonish Vue rocks. It makes me want to run screaming from the room, I hope they will fix this someday and provide a decent looking rock that's as worthy as the rest of Vue.

Very interesting!

I recently made some quick tests to make hoodoos with metablobs and displacement materials, but the results were less interesting than the ones you get with this very simple method.

Theoretically, then this should work with any shape and any applied texture. Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I took your suggestion on displacement textures and applied them to the Vue rock. Seems there is still hope for it yet.

Without the textures the rock itself is really quite boring, it would be nice to have access to metablobs.
